Ellen Lee DeGeneres born on January 26, 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana is an American TV host, actress, writer, popular comedian, animal right activist, producer and a philanthropist. She started her popular TV show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2003.
DeGeneres’ mother, Betty DeGeneres was a speech therapist while her father Elliot Everett DeGeneres was an insurance agent. Her only brother, Vance, is a musician and a producer.
Her mother got married to Roy Gruessendorf who was a salesman after she divorced her dad in 1974. Consequently, Ellen moved with her mother and step-father to Atlanta, Texas while her brother stayed back with Elliot, her biological father. Until this time, 13, she was raised as a Christian Scientist.
Ellen attended Grace King High School in Metairie, Louisiana for her first years of high school and finished from Atlanta High School in May 1976. She later moved to New Orleans where she attended the University of New Orleans majoring in communication studies. She left the school to a clerical work at a law firm with her cousin, Laura Gillen. She eventually settled for comedy after carefully climbing through the stages as a stand-up comedian until she landed in emcee Clyde’s Comedy Club in 1981.
Many of the other early jobs she related with her audience in her comedy show include being a waitress, a house painter, a bartender and also a hostess. She once also announced on her show that the New England Historic Genealogical Society confirmed that she’s a 15th cousin to the Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.
She drew a loud media attention in 1994 when she announced that she’s a lesbian.
According to Forbes’ 2015 rating, she was named the 50th most powerful woman on earth with her earnings valued at 75 million US dollars. She also turned up in number two on the World Pride Power list.
In 1997, Degeneres caused a bit of media noise when she came out as gay. She announced that she’s a lesbian and has the story running on the cover of Time magazine on April 12 of the same year.
Unfortunately for her, the revelation affected her career and left her in depression. Her mother, Betty DeGeneres who later became one of Ellen’s strongest supporters expressed her shock when Ellen DeGeneres came out on her sexual orientation.
Betty is presently an active member of Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gay, PFLAG. She’s also the spokesperson for the Coming Out Project.
She had been in romantic relationships with Anne Heche that ended in 2000, and Alexandra Hedison between 2000 till 2004.
Though DeGeneres had been in a relationship with Portia de Rossi since 2004, they only got engaged and married after the same-sex marriage in California got lifted.
After trying her hands on a couple of careers, Degeneres got hooked on comedy. She started in the early 80s as a stand-up comedian and eventually appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. That happened to be the beginning of the real breakthrough for her as a comedian.
The host, Carson, compared her with the famous artiste, Bob Newhart and invited her over for an onscreen chat after her set. Besides that fact that she was the first female comedian to be given such opportunity, the invite from the iconic host turned out as one of the strongest endorsement for her as a comedian.
Apart from comedy, she has also starred in Mr. Wrong (1996), EDtv (1999), and The Love Letter in 1999. She also provided the voice of Dory in the animated films: Finding Nemo in 2003 and Finding Dory in 2016. Finding Nemo made her the first actress to have won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for a voice performance.
She has also participated in two television sitcoms, Ellen and The Ellen Show. She’s also said to be the first openly lesbian actress to have played a lesbian character on the television. Her first ever show was Open House where she played Margo Van Meter. She has then been involved in a couple of other failed and successful shows.
DeGeneres has hosted many programmes including international awards like the Academy Awards, the Primetime Emmys and Grammy Awards. She was also a judge on American Idol’s ninth season.

In her career, DeGeneres has been privileged to host many awards and therapeutic comic approach after major national disasters have come to play on many of these occasions. On November 4, 2001, she hosted the Emmy Awards after the infamous September 11 terrorist attacks in the states.
One of her famous lines at the event: “What would bug the Taliban more than seeing a gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews?” remained popular till date.
She also hosted the PrimeTime Emmy Awards in 2005 days after the Hurricane Katrina. Other awards ceremonies she has hosted are 1996 and 1997 Grammy Awards; 79th Academy Awards and a few others.
